I believe in it. I want to do my service. I would be your perfect juror. I am fair and neutral and smart.
But I do not want to be here. I do not have time to be here.
It is interesting , listening to the fellow jurors - tell their stories - wanting to be seen and heard.
But they do not want to be here either. They do not have time to be here.
CONFLICT of Civic DUTY versus ego versus responsibility.
We want to be considered a perfect juror - but do not wish to be picked for any trial.
We want to be impartial - but want to tell our story of what has happened that makes us who we are.
We are all busy and our lives are full of responsibility. Having jury duty as "one more thing to do" - is tough when people have businesses to run, are working to find balance in their lives, and trying to make a living.
There is no system to check identity of the juror's present - except the paperwork. I love the idea of hiring an unemployed friend to sit it out for me when duty calls - but I follow the rules and therefore I spend my day here answering questions, listening, and doing my civic duty.
